Text Box: Bonaparte Undertakes Comprehensive Community Plan Outline

The Bonaparte Band is beginning the process of developing a Comprehensive Community Plan (CCP). Comprehensive community planning is a new approach to planning that involves the whole community. All community members will be invited to discuss how they want their community to be in the future. All areas of Band life are interrelated and will be included – governance, land and resources, health and education, infrastructure development, culture, social issues and economic development. Community members come together to determine strengths and issues, to create a vision, to develop an action plan, and to implement and monitor projects.

The Band has received grant funding to begin the first phase of developing a CCP. This phase will involve developing a CCP Outline and will include holding meetings with band staff and family groups to identify strengths, issues and gaps between the future the community wants and where the community is currently. A discussion paper will be developed and presented to the community before the CCP Outline is completed.

Lori Pilon, Deb Biddiscombe and Nancy Murphy of Kenuc’entwec Development Corporation have been engaged to work with the Band to develop the CCP Outline. Kenuc’entwec is an entirely First Nations owned multi-faceted development corporation providing planning and consulting services to First Nations communities. This is an eight month project and will begin in August 2010 and be completed by March 2011. A part-time Project Coordinator will be hired from the community to provide administrative support and assist in the development of the CCP Outline.

Consultation with the elders, youth, community members and band staff will begin in September. Notices will be sent out in advance. All members of the community are invited to participate.
